Custom Hay Sheds

Purpose-designed hay storage sheds with proper ventilation and access. Open-front, enclosed, or combination designs, built to protect your hay investment from weather damage. Every hay shed is custom engineered for your property, storage volume and access requirements.

Hay Shed Design Options

Sizing and Capacity

Hay sheds are sized to your storage volume, from small property hay barns to large-scale commercial hay storage. Clearspan portal frame designs (no internal columns) maximise every square metre of floor space.

Need more width? Multi-span configurations connect portal frames for unlimited building width while maintaining the clearspan advantage.

Ventilation and Hay Safety

Proper ventilation is critical for hay storage. Moisture build-up causes spontaneous combustion, one of the most common causes of farm fires. Our hay shed designs consider:

Engineered for Rural Australia

Every hay shed is fully engineered for your site, wind region, terrain category, and soil conditions all factored into the design. COLORBOND® steel cladding and roofing with up to a 45 year warranty. Full council-ready engineering documentation included.

Hay sheds are part of our farm shed range. Also see machinery sheds, livestock sheds, and open front sheds.

Why Invest in a Proper Hay Shed?

Unprotected hay loses 25 to 35% of its nutritional value per season through weather exposure. Rain and UV degrade protein content, while ground moisture promotes mould growth from the bottom up. A purpose-built hay shed pays for itself in 2 to 3 seasons through reduced spoilage, and premium hay buyers won’t buy weathered product.

The Numbers

At $250 to $350/tonne for quality hay, the savings on a 500-bale stack compound quickly.

Wall Height Guide for Hay Storage

Tip: Always go taller than your current needs. The incremental cost of an extra metre of wall height is far less than building a second shed later.

Hay Shed FAQs

Which direction should the open side face?

Away from prevailing weather. In most of Australia, that’s north or north-east (storms typically come from the west/south-west). In tropical regions, orient based on cyclone-season storm direction.

Do I need a concrete slab?

Not necessarily. Compacted road base or gravel is adequate for most farm hay sheds and allows ground-level air circulation under the stack. Concrete is better for export hay or food-grade storage. See our foundations guide.

How do I prevent hay fires?

Stack dry hay only (below 15% moisture). Monitor core temperature with a hay probe for the first 6 weeks. Maintain fire breaks and separation distance from other buildings. Never run electrical wiring through a hay shed unless it’s in protective conduit.
