Equine Applications

Why Steel Frame for Equine?

Steel frame construction is ideal for equine buildings. Portal frame engineering eliminates internal columns, critical for arena covers where unobstructed space is essential. Steel is termite-proof, fire-resistant and low-maintenance compared to traditional timber stables.

Stable Complex Design

A well-designed stable complex keeps horses comfortable, simplifies daily routines, and minimises injury risk. The fundamentals:

Stable Layout Options

Indoor Riding Arena Covers

A covered riding arena is the single biggest investment an equine property can make, and the one that pays back every rainy day, every 40°C summer afternoon, and every frosty morning you’d otherwise cancel a session.

Arena Cover Specifications

Arena Type Typical Size Min Wall Height Clear Span
Small private arena 20m x 40m 4.5m 20m
Standard dressage arena 20m x 60m 5m to 6m 20m
Competition arena 30m x 60m+ 6m to 7.5m 30m+
Round yard cover 18m to 22m diameter 4.5m 18m to 22m

Every arena cover is engineered as a clearspan portal frame, zero internal columns. The structure must handle wind load, potential uplift, and (in some areas) live loads without any support posts inside the riding area.

Field Shelters and Run-In Sheds

Not every horse needs a stable. For paddock-kept horses, an open-front field shelter provides essential protection from sun, wind, rain, and insects. Simple three-sided structures with:

Equine Shed FAQs

What’s the best flooring for horse stables?

Concrete with rubber stable mats is the gold standard, easy to clean, hygienic, and provides joint cushioning. The concrete should have 1-2% fall to a drain, with the rubber mats providing the comfort layer. Avoid bare concrete (too hard on joints) and bare earth (impossible to sanitise).

How much ventilation do stables need?

More than most people think. Ammonia from urine and manure causes respiratory disease, it’s the #1 health risk in poorly ventilated stables. Design for at least 4 air changes per hour. Ridge vents, open upper walls, and louvred panels provide passive ventilation. Avoid fully enclosed designs unless you’re installing mechanical ventilation.

Can you build an arena cover for an existing arena?

Yes. We can engineer a cover structure to go over an existing outdoor arena. The footing locations are designed around your current arena dimensions and fence lines. Call us with your arena size and we’ll provide a quote.

Do equine buildings need council approval?

In most areas, yes, especially for stables, arena covers, and larger structures. Some rural zones have exemptions for small agricultural buildings like field shelters. Check with your local council or see our council approval guide.

What about bushfire zones?

Steel equine buildings perform well in bushfire-prone areas. COLORBOND® steel is non-combustible (BAL rating compliant), and the building can be engineered to meet BAL-12.5 through BAL-FZ requirements. If your property is in a designated bushfire zone, we factor this into the engineering. See our cyclone and high-wind rated sheds for more on extreme-condition engineering.
