Every arena cover is engineered as a clearspan portal frame, zero internal columns. The structure must handle wind load, potential uplift, and (in some areas) live loads without any support posts inside the riding area.
Not every horse needs a stable. For paddock-kept horses, an open-front field shelter provides essential protection from sun, wind, rain, and insects. Simple three-sided structures with:

Concrete with rubber stable mats is the gold standard, easy to clean, hygienic, and provides joint cushioning. The concrete should have 1-2% fall to a drain, with the rubber mats providing the comfort layer. Avoid bare concrete (too hard on joints) and bare earth (impossible to sanitise).
More than most people think. Ammonia from urine and manure causes respiratory disease, it’s the #1 health risk in poorly ventilated stables. Design for at least 4 air changes per hour. Ridge vents, open upper walls, and louvred panels provide passive ventilation. Avoid fully enclosed designs unless you’re installing mechanical ventilation.

In most areas, yes, especially for stables, arena covers, and larger structures. Some rural zones have exemptions for small agricultural buildings like field shelters. Check with your local council or see our council approval guide.
Steel equine buildings perform well in bushfire-prone areas. COLORBOND® steel is non-combustible (BAL rating compliant), and the building can be engineered to meet BAL-12.5 through BAL-FZ requirements.
